Tuberculosis is an infectious disease with a high mortality rate. The tuberculosis epidemic started in Europe around the 17th century known as the Great White Plague, because of how pale those infected with TB had become. High population density, as well as the poor sanitary conditions that characterized most European and North American cities, created a perfect environment for its propagation. As the epidemic spread past Europe, there was a worldwide effort to find a cure for the disease, thus the sanatorium movement began.

Here in the US, sanatoriums began to appear in the late 1800s around large cities like Boston and New York. A vaccine was developed in 1906 in France but it wasn’t until after World War II that the vaccine was widely accepted in the United States, Great Britain and Germany. Tuberculosis cases dropped from 100,000+ a year to around 5,000+ a year.

Many sanatoriums throughout the United States closed down in the 70s or were converted into psychiatric centers. Tuberculosis saw a resurgence in the 1980s as new drug-resistant strains were on the rise.

In response, the World Health Organization issued a global health emergency in 1993. Today, tuberculosis is still very much a threat as its estimated that 1/3 of the world’s population is infected with TB. In 2014, 9.6 million people around the world became sick with TB disease and there were 1.5 million TB-related deaths worldwide.
